in theory you might one day edit the images of an XFL file directly in Photoshop without disturbing the timeline information also contained in that file. Or you might be able to import a page from a word processing document into a Flash presentation.

I came across this site which offers a new way to host documents on the web that may be the best thing out there! Users must have flash installed in their browser, but if they do, they can have instant access to the documents without waiting for downloads as is the case with a pdf.
